The list of Courses in SHS/Technical and Vocational Institutes in Ghana has seen little or no change since the inception of the education reform a couple of years now.

The reform that caused the duration of Senior High Schools to be lengthened from three (3) years to four (4) years in the 2007/2008 academic year had little impact on the core curriculum and the specialized subjects being pursued under the different courses.

While the four-year duration of senior high school education has been uprightly abolished by the then Prof. Atta Mills administration in 2010, most SHS used academic strategies to introduce all the various subjects to students in the first year. Then offer courses and program selection guidance for students to choose their preferred courses in the second year.

At the SHS level, students will be expected to learn mandatory core subjects. These subjects are Mathematics, English, Integrated Science and Social Studies.

Also, each student is required to offer four (4) elective subjects. The list of elective subjects depends entirely on the course chosen by the student.

For instance, a student who is pursuing Home Science (formerly Home Economics) may not be required to read Physics.
Below is the list of courses offered at the SHS, Technical and Vocational Institutes and the possible elective subjects that can be chosen by students.

    Good evening.
Please I have some questions I would like to have their answers in details.
I should have completed my Senior Secondary School in the 2007.but unfortunately my parents couldn’t provide my bills to write the exams. Now my mind is on it to solve this by getting the certificate but i am not currently in Ghana.
Will there be an online course for me?
Can I write the exams online to obtain the certificate?
    Thank you.
Hope to hear from you soon.

Engineering is a very broad category. Electrical Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, Computer Engineer, Civil Engineer etc. If you don’t really have any specific engineering career in mind now. You can go to any SHS that offer General Science. After that, you can do any engineering programme at the tertiary. If you are specific of the area of engineering, you can go to SECTECH and do Applied Electricity for Electrical Engineering, Building and Construction for Civil Engineering, Auto mechanics for Mechanical Engineering and the like….

The list goes on and on and I believe creating a separate article for that is the best way to go about it but from my head, I can point you to Nkawie Sech Tech, Kumasi Technical Institute, Armed Forces Sec Tech, Obuasi Sec Tech. All in the Ashanti region. As I said, I will create a separate article for this request with all the various schools and courses offered.

To my understanding, at the SHS level, ICT is a subject (Core or Elective) that is mandatory alongside your chosen course (Business, General Arts, Science, Technical etc,). It is at the Tertiary level that you can opt for ICT as a standalone programme of study (Computer Science, Computer Networking, Software Engineering etc.)

Computer engineering is more relative and does not only rely on science to be accepted at the tertiary level. Of course, with a science background, you can do any of the engineering disciplines at the tertially. But if computer engineering is the only programme you want to do and nothing else, you can go for applied electricity at SHS.

      1. First thing first, decide which courses you would like to run.
      2. Plan for a convenient venue preferably closer to a community (I’m aware you probably know this but I still have to add it though).
      3. Get advice from Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET). They oversee all aspects of technical and vocational education and training in the country.
      4. COTVET will take you through all the formalities. (Registration, licensing, qualification of staff etc.)

      etc.

Ok, you can also change the program. The most important thing is to do your best and perform well at the WASSCE.

Per my understanding, Applied Electricity is part of the technical category in the SHS curriculum structure. For this reason, a SHS must have a technical department to run Applied Electricity. Also, my knowledge about this field and what I have seen is that all Senior High Technical Schools (SecTech) run Applied Electricity.

I later joined the Untrained Teachers Diploma in Basic Education and passed with Second Class Lower Division in Diploma in Basic Education at Accra College of Education And finally got appointment. I have also continued to do my First Degree at the University of Education Winneba, also graduated with Bachelor Degree in Basic Education, Second Class Lower Division again. Please Sir, I still have love for my Technical background, what should I do? I really need your advice. Thank you.

It’s clear that you’ve built a strong foundation in both technical and educational fields. However, and unfortunately, as it stands now a Degree in Basic Education won’t allow you to teach at Technical Schools.

If you really want to switch to Technical or Sec Tech, the only option is to obtain a degree in your chosen field (Auto Mechanic in your case). Then secure assurance from one of the TECH/SECs when they open the transfer window.

I will be available here if you still need further assistance.

Hello Opoku, thank you for reaching out. Before any submission, I want to know why you are choosing a career path for your nephew.
      Now back to business, both sectors offer a good foundation for JHS leavers. However, as the name implies, TVET offers more hands-on practical activities as compared to SECTECH. Let me reiterate that this has nothing to do with the school’s setup. Yes, some SECTECHs are better equipped in terms of laboratory and other technical resources, but since they follow the SHS curriculum (syllabus), time for hands-on activities is very small, sometimes not even factored in the school’s timetable. So let’s put it like this;

If your nephew is interested in getting hands-on practicals and very much interested in Architecture and nothing else, then you opt for TVET.

On the other hand, if he wants to taste both sides, like a little technical and a little SHS, and perhaps decides on a career later after school, then SECTECH is the best.

Notwithstanding, kindly do well and discuss the options with him, guide him, especially the career path for the course he wants to pursue without choosing for him.

Yes, of course, if you manage to further it to the tertiary and do an intensive IT program or, better still, computer science at the tertiary. Most of the advertised IT management position requires tertiary qualification.

Honestly, it is not easy at all. It is, however, not only about IT managers but of every field/industry. But that should not discourage you. Just try as much as possible to expertise in the field, and you can even start your own company to employ others.

You should take entrepreneurial courses and attend business seminars. Most are even free and online.

What I know is that Civil Engineering, like other engineering programs, requires a Science background and some selected technical courses. However, your elective maths can do you good. You can make inquiries from the admission office of some of the universities offering engineering courses. Check KNUST, UENR, etc.

The number of subjects depends on the electives you choose and whether you opt for pure technical or SecTech. Typically, Applied Electricity (SecTech) is accompanied by 9 subjects. Out of these 9 subjects, only 8 will be taken during WASSCE.

Hello, I want to study medicine to become a forensic pathologist but I don’t know what course I should choose in Shs. I also think general science has too much pressure is there any other course I can offer in Shs to pursue my career?

It’s great to hear about your interest in pursuing a career as a forensic pathologist! However, you should note that general science is typically, to the very best of my knowledge, the most direct path towards pursuing a career in forensic pathology.

If you have any more questions or need further assistance in planning your educational path, feel free to ask. Wishing you the best of luck in your pursuit of becoming a forensic pathologist!
