Mfantsipim is a boarding high school for boys located in the city of Cape Coast in Ghana. It was founded in 1876 by the Methodist Church with the intention of assisting boys living on the Gold Coast at the time in the development of their academic careers, moral character, and spiritual life.
The institution was first known as Wesleyan High School, and James Picot, a French scholar who was just 18 years old when he was appointed as the school’s first headmaster, was its first headmaster.
Mfantsipim is derived from the Fante word “Mfantsefo-apem,” which literally translates to “thousands of Fantes” but was originally understood by the Fantes to imply “the assembling of hosts of academics for transformation.” Mfantsipim’s meaning has evolved over time.
