Overview of Category A Senior High Schools in the Ashanti Region
This article outlines a comprehensive list of Category A Senior High Schools in Ashanti. Compared to other regions in Ghana, the Ashanti Region has the most senior high schools. According to the Ghana Education Service’s 2019 school register, 122 public Senior High Schools are divided into categories A, B, and C.
These major ranking elements include WASSCE academic performance, school achievement, infrastructure, and facilities. The list here is also category A SHS in the Greater Accra region while we have also published the list of the top 50 senior high schools in Ghana in 2023.
As Kumasi High School was designated as a Category A school in 2017, other famous schools were demoted to Category B. Kumasi Anglican SHS, Tweneboah Koduah SHS, Konongo Odumasi SHS, St. Monica’s SHS, Effiduasi SHS, and others are among them.
Also, according to the late 2017 evaluation of the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS), there are six remaining categories of A schools in the Ashanti Region.

Detailed List of Category A Senior High schools in the Ashanti Region
T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School
T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School is a mixed second-cycle public educational institution in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The school was founded on January 30, 1950, by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission, Ghana.
T.I. Ahmadiyya SHS has chalked a lot of notable personalities, such as; Musician Gyakie, athlete Atsu Nyamadi, and rapper Strongman, among others. T.I. Ahmadiyya SHS offer General arts, science, visual arts, and business and goes by the motto: Knowledge is Power.
Opoku Ware School
Regarding top-notch education in Ghana, the Opoku Ware School always comes to mind. It is located in Santasi, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti region. Kumasi hosts some of the best second-cycle institutions in the country.
The school was established in 1952 by Asantehene Kyebi Agyeman Prempeh II. Opoku Ware School was one of the five Catholic schools in Ghana that year.
Aside from producing high-profile people in business, politics, and sports such as James Kwesi Appiah, Opoku Ware school will pride itself on schooling rapper Yaw Tog.
Opoku Ware School, often known as OWASS, is an all-boys high school and goes by the motto: Deus Lux Scientiae.
Prempeh College
Prempeh College is also a category A public SHS for boys located in Kumasi, the capital city of the Ashanti Region. The School was founded in 1949 by the Asanteman traditional authority, the British Colonial Government, the Methodist Church of Ghana, and the Presbyterian Church of Ghana.
Prempeh college was named after Osei Tutu Agyeman Prempeh II, the then King of Ashanti, who donated the School’s land.
In 2004, Prempeh College topped matriculation at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, with 441 students admitted. Again, in 2012, 296 students from the college were admitted.
Prempeh College is one of the best secondary schools in Ghana. The School can boast of several awards including the National Robotics Championships, National Science and Maths Quiz and the Toyota Innovation Award at the International Robofest World Championships held in Michigan, USA.
The school goes by the slogan: Suban ne Nimdeε (Character and Integrity) and has taught prominent personalities such as Ex-president John Kufuor, Kwaku Sintim-Misa, Dr Kwabena Duffuor, etc.
Kumasi High School
Kumasi High School, often referred to as KUHIS, is an all-boys category A senior high school in the Ashanti region of Ghana. The school was established in 1962 by S. K. Amoah and is located in Gyinyase, a town near Ahinsan Estate.
Also, the students are known collectively as Mmerantee (Gentlemen) and go by the motto: Truth conquers. Moreover, Kumasi High School has produced many high-profile people, including politicians, business tycoons, musicians, athletes, etc.
Yaa Asantewaa Girls’ Senior High School
Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president, founded Yaa Asantewaa Girls’ Senior High School in 1951. It is a Category A senior high school for only girls.
Ghana Education Trust started funding Yaa Asantewaa Girls School in 1960. Yaa Asantewaa Girls School is named after Ejisu Yaa Asantewaa’s Queen Mother, who led a war against British colonists.
Yaa Asantewaa Girls’ School is located in a suburb called Tanoso in the Atwima Mponua District in Kumasi, Ashanti Region. The school has also produced several public figures, such as Serwaa Amihere, broadcast journalist and news presenter, and Efya, singer and songwriter.

St. Louis Senior High School
St. Louis Senior High School (Louis) is an all-female category A school which is located at Oduom, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
The school was established by St. Louis Sisters in 1952 with an initial group of 12 girls. However, in 1953, the school recorded a total of 42 students. In December 1957, St. Louis Senior High School wrote its first “O” Level Examination with 11 students.
It also has prominent personalities such as Lydia Forson, Dzifa Gomashie, Afia Schwarzenegger, etc., and goes by the motto: UT-SINT-UNUM DIEU LE VEULT.

Students who attend a Category A school can receive a more well-rounded education and prepare for tertiary-level studies. Also, here are some of the advantages of attending a Category A senior high school in the Ashanti Region:
